Appearing on Broadway for one night only: Barack Obama, in a solo comedy act roasting the Republican Party.

The president left a crowd of more than 1,300 in stiches on Monday night at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, home to the hit musical “Hamilton” about Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The cast staged a special performance for a Democratic National Committee fundraiser, with Obama as the encore.

Deviating from his typical fundraiser spiel, Obama said the 2016 Republican presidential candidates seem to “occupy a different reality” in which the country has taken a perilous turn since he took office nearly seven years ago

Hillary Clinton will need black voters if she wants to win the Democratic nomination and the presidency next year. But African American voters were a major reason she lost the early nominating state of South Carolina to Barack Obama by nearly 30 points in 2008.

In 2008, 55 percent of Democratic primary voters in South Carolina were black. And they voted overwhelmingly for Obama. Obama won the primary in a surprise 55-to-27-percent landslide over Clinton. With black voters, the margin was even bigger — 78 percent to 19 percent.

Of course, Obama went on to win the presidency, as the first black president, and won record margins with black voters.Democrats have consistently won overwhelming majorities of black voters, but Barack Obama won record levels.
